Project Description
The project is located in Jokha village, Kamrej district of Gujarat, spanning 1.50 hectares. For years, this land was used for intensive sugarcane cultivation, which gradually degraded soil fertility and reduced long-term productivity. As yields declined and input costs rose, the farmer was considering giving up agriculture and selling the land for infrastructure development. To prevent this shift and restore the land, the project developers encouraged them to transition to sustainable agroforestry. Under this initiative mango trees, coconut trees, and moringa trees have been planted, transforming the once-degraded farmland into a diverse fruit orchard. This tree-based system not only improves soil health and sequesters carbon but also provides steady long-term livelihoods, offering farmer a viable alternative to unsustainable cropping.

The primary stakeholders in this project is the participating farmer, who both own and manage the project land. There is no broader local community involvement beyond these farmer.
The farmer himself is responsible for all project activities, including site preparation, planting, maintenance, and long-term management of the trees. Their Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is obtained before implementation begins to ensure their full understanding and commitment.
Project Goals
The primary goals of this project are to rehabilitate degraded farmland, enhance carbon sequestration, and establish a sustainable livelihood model for the farmer through tree-based farming. By transitioning away from unsustainable sugarcane cultivation, the land is being converted into a perennial, low-impact plantation system that restores soil fertility, improves organic matter, and reduces erosion. The introduction of multipurpose species strengthens biodiversity by providing food, habitat, and vital ecosystem services, while also generating long-term, climate-resilient income through the sale of fruits, moringa leaves, and future carbon finance. In doing so, the project not only secures farmer livelihoods but also contributes to regional climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and locking carbon within both biomass and soils.
Co-benefits
Yes, multiple co-benefits are anticipated. Ecologically, the plantation improves soil quality, groundwater retention, and biodiversity by offering habitat for pollinators, birds, and beneficial soil organisms. Socially, the farmer benefits from diversified income streams through mango, coconut, and moringa products, reducing reliance on a single crop and lowering financial risk. The project also reduces the use of chemical fertilisers over time by promoting organic practices, improving both human and environmental health. Collectively, these co-benefits strengthen climate resilience, enhance rural livelihoods, and showcase the potential of sustainable farming practices for wider adoption.
