Project Description
The project, together with other projects by TROFACO in the community, is about bringing back diverse forest on land that was converted to agriculture +30 years ago. The community wants the forest back, because their traditions and livelihoods are closely associated with forest. And the law support this. Land that receives trees is legally converted to forest land and can never return to farming. The farmers plant native hardwood including some species that provide valuable spices. (See more on trees.trofaco.org)
Stakeholders and local communities involved in the project
The community plant many trees with TROFACO. They also produce – in an organised group – other forestbased crops, such as bamboo shoots. This is supported by TROFACOs local partner CRED-TAC, who is also partner in this project. The local forest office as well as other authorities at commune and province levels supervise the reforestation work and ensure the permanence of the new forest.
Project Goals
Bring back forest in landscape with steep hills. Improve the local livelihoods through access to forest products, such as medicine, mushroom, fruits, herbs, honey etc..
Biodiversity increases as the forest grows. This is monitored and documented in the project.
Co-benefits
The project contributes to prevention of local landslides and improves water retention, as well as lowering of ground temperatures.
TROFACO shares part of the project income through our independent ‘CO2 foundation’ (See trofaco.org or LinkedIn). Use of these funds is decided by the community.
