Project Description
The Jacarandás Reforestation Project started in 2020 with the objective of restoring around 15 ha using more than 100 native species from the Atlantic Forest biome. The RPPN Jacarandás, created in 2021, guarantees the perpetual preservation of this private protected area, thus ensuring the long-term permanence of the project.
The project area is located in the municipality of Nazaré Paulista, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The Jacarandás RPPN is located in the region with the highest priority for the formation of ecological corridors within the State, highlighting the relevance of the project for the restoration and conservation of biodiversity.
In addition, the project area is within the Cantareira System, the largest water supply source in the São Paulo region. Only 26% of this watershed is composed of natural vegetation, and therefore, the restoration of these areas is essential for maintaining the quality and supply of water to millions of people.
Stakeholders and local communities involved in the project
The project will benefit all those who depend on the Cantareira system for water supply, as two springs and four rivers will be reforested. Thus, the project will benefit all those who depend on this watershed, an estimated population of over 5.3 million people at São Paulo region. In addition, other important stakeholders include people from the local community who are involved in seed collection, seedling production, tree nursery activities, planting, maintenance, and environmental education.
Project Goals
The main goal of this project is to promote the restoration of a fragment of the Atlantic Forest at RPPN Jacarandás, a private protected area created in 2021 with the objective of leaving a legacy for future generations. The Atlantic Rainforest is one of the world's biodiversity hotspot, however less than 15% of the original forest cover remains intact. Therefore, the Jacarandás Reforestation Project is crucial for the preservation of an important section of this biome, which will be perpetually conserved through the RPPN status on the land. This will provide long-term benefits resulting from the conservation of biodiversity and improvements in the quality and quantity of water for the population supplied by the Cantareira Water System.
Co-benefits
The Jacarandás Reforestation Project provides several co-benefits in addition to carbon sequestration, which include:
- Increased biodiversity: the reforestation with native species creates habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. Biodiversity will be monitored through camera traps and fauna/flora inventory;
- Improved soil health: the reforestation of degraded areas help preventing soil erosion and improve soil fertility.
- Enhanced water quantity and quality: project activities increase the natural coverage of the soil, and therefore, improve permeability, filter water and reduce runoff, leading to improved flow and quality of water.
- Social benefits: the reforestation project creates local jobs for tree planting and maintenance, provides opportunities for education, and help improving the quality of life for local communities.
