Project Description
Kyamuwooya-Luwero project is an afforestation project located in Kyamuwooya village, Makurubita Sub- County, Luwero district in central Uganda. It was established in 2021 to plant trees in the area, especially fruit trees, for environmental, nutritional, and economic benefits. By December 2023, we had grown over 150 trees of 7 species on more than 2 acres of land and our target is to plant 1000 trees by 2027.
Stakeholders and local communities involved in the project
The key stakeholders include Ms. Jenipher Nuwera-a partner who supervises the project, Fr. Robert Bakeine an advisor, the local community, the area agricultural extension worker who provides technical advice and Mr. Kaaga-the nursery operator who provides the seedlings. The local communities are involved in the project by providing labor during planting, weeding, and harvesting of fruits. The project team also routinely sensitizes community members on the environmental benefits of tree planting.
Project Goals
To improve the nutrition status of communities and mitigate the effects of climate change through planting trees (mainly fruit trees) that will lead to increased carbon sequestration and a sustainable environment.
Co-benefits
The project will have other co-benefits like the provision of fruits such as avocados, mangoes, soursop, and jackfruit to local communities which will improve the nutrition status of communities, especially among the children. In the future, the project will integrate beekeeping to enhance the income and environmental benefits.
