Project Description

The Kisii Restoration and Agroforestry project is an aggressive idea which seeks to work with farmers to plant trees in selected water catchment areas and wetlands that have been interfered with by mostly, human activity. The organization has agreed with the local farmers on the following gaols that seek to mitigate the effects of climate change; 1. Create awareness on the impact of climate change on their livelihoods and actively involve the community in coming up with mitigation measures, both short and long term. 2. Embrace agroforestry for their ecological and social economic well being. 3. Participate in restoration activities where, trees will be planted in areas identified as either rain catchment or wetland/swamp 4. Protect existing rivers, wetlands, swamps and hills that are important in influencing rain patterns and biodiversity 5. And nurture and protect the trees planted for a period of up to 40 years.

Stakeholders and local communities involved in the project

Highlands CBO is a community based organization made of men and women who come from arpound Manga Hills. They then seek fundinf amnd reources for projects that they involve other community groups to impliment. The other stake holdres are governement Agriculture and Environment dpertments, local adminstration and commuinity members.

Project Goals

The main objective is to; 1. Restore the biodeiviserty of Manga hills by 2027 2). by, planting 500000 indegenous species of environmentally friends trees. 3.) managing and protecting the tree planting project until 2028.

Co-benefits

The major benefit is awareness creation. Local farmers need t understand that one of the reasons why global economic numbers are worrying is because of climate change. They also need to know the real effects of climate change on their daily activities and why they must actively participate in finding mitigation measures. The farmers will directly benefit from the trees planted and harvest fruits within a short time hence boosting their social economic wellbeing. products, and economic oppor The project will benefit Highlands Environment CBO achieve its targets which include planting one million trees and grafted fruits in the next three years. The project will also act as a reference or model for government, local farmers and other stake holders who want to participate in restoration activities where, its success can be used as a pilot program or be replicated elsewhere.
